The Housemaid is an upcoming movie adaptation of the 2022 Frieda McFadden novel of the same name and there's been some exciting news about the release date, cast, and production. Based on the first book in The Housemaid series by author Frieda McFadden (a pen name for a prolific American author/practicing physician), The Housemaid is a psychological thriller movie that was first announced in April 2023 and in just two years, there has already been quite a lot of news.

Lionsgate got the rights to the film and then clearly went to work right afterward. Modern book-to-movie adaptations can be fantastic films that stand on their own, and even add something missing in the original novel, like with Gone Girl; or they can completely flop, like in the case of The Dark Tower. Sydney Sweeney And Amanda Seyfried Are Set To Star

The cast for The Housemaid was first announced alongside the news about Feig. Sydney Sweeney is set to play Millie, a struggling woman who gets a fresh start when she gets a job as a housemaid to Nina, played by Amanda Seyfried, a wealthy, upper-class woman. Brandon Sklenar was later announced to play Andrew, Nina's husband (via Deadline). Nina and Andrew's groundskeeper, Enzo, will be played by Michele Morrone (via People).

It has not been officially confirmed, but on January 22, 2025, actress Indiana Elle shared photos of herself and Sydney Sweeney on her Instagram with the caption,

"Cat's out of the bag! EPIC night out with my amazing costar in @housemaidmovie @sydney_sweeney and @brooklynnets and @nyknicks at @barclayscenter . Still buzzing!"

It's not clear yet which character Elle will portray.

While it's possible that The Housemaid movie adapts multiple books in Freida McFadden's series, it's also completely possible that there will be three more film adaptations if the first is successful. The Housemaid could turn into a movie franchise itself if Sweeney and the others are happy with the product and Lionsgate decides it's worth the investment.
