The Housemaid is an upcoming movie adaptation of the 2022 Frieda McFadden novel of the same name and there's been some exciting news about the release date, cast, and production. Based on the first book in The Housemaid series by author Frieda McFadden (a pen name for a prolific American author/practicing physician), The Housemaid is a psychological thriller movie that was first announced in April 2023 and in just two years, there has already been quite a lot of news.
Lionsgate got the rights to the film and then clearly went to work right afterward. Modern book-to-movie adaptations can be fantastic films that stand on their own, and even add something missing in the original novel, like with Gone Girl; or they can completely flop, like in the case of The Dark Tower. Hopefully, The Housemaid is in the former camp. There has been a lot of news about The Housemaid since April 2023 with everything from the cast to the release date being announced.

The Housemaid Is A Twisting, Psychological Thriller

The Housemaid follows Millie, a young, down-on-her-luck woman hoping to put the demons of her past behind her. She gets her chance when she earns a steady housekeeping job for the wealthy, upper-class couple, Nina and Amanda. Offered a room in the attic that locks from the outside, Millie soon learns that her own secrets pale in comparison to what her new employers are hiding. It's a plot ripe for twists, turns, and dark reveals. Sweeney and Seyfried's characters will likely end up coming into direct conflict by the end of the film.
The Housemaid Movie's Franchise Potential
There Are Four Books In The Housemaid Franchise

The Housemaid is a best-selling novel that spent two weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list and also won the 2023 International Thriller Writers award for best paperback original novel. Even better, it's only the first book in a series that includes The Housemaid's Secret (February 20, 2023), "The Housemaid's Wedding" (November 22, 2024), and The Housemaid is Watching (June 11, 2024).

While it's possible that The Housemaid movie adapts multiple books in Freida McFadden's series, it's also completely possible that there will be three more film adaptations if the first is successful. The Housemaid could turn into a movie franchise itself if Sweeney and the others are happy with the product and Lionsgate decides it's worth the investment.
