The critically acclaimed filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur's first marriage was with Medha Gujral, niece of India's former PM, Inder Kumar Gujral. The couple got married in 1984 and parted ways in 1994. It was in 1997 when Shekhar created a stir in the entire film industry when he got married to Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, who was 30 years younger than him. The couple gave birth to a baby girl and chose the name Kaveri for her. However, cracks soon started appearing in their marriage, and what followed was an ugly divorce proceeding. Suchitra accused Shekhar of infidelity and also blamed Priety Zinta for their broken marriage.

The couple also indulged in a property dispute, and finally, in 2007, they were officially divorced.
