On World Children's Day, African Youth Demand Action for Their Rights
GABORONE, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- In a powerful display of unity and determination, youth delegates from nine African nations gathered at the Botswana Parliament on Saturday, calling for urgent action to protect and promote the fundamental rights of children across the continent. These young advocates, representing Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa, spoke with one voice, demanding an end to the pervasive issues of violence, poverty, and high school dropout rates.
Their call extended beyond these immediate concerns, encompassing essential needs such as guaranteed access to nutrition, menstrual products, sanitation, and inclusive education. They emphasized the importance of trained teachers for learners with disabilities, ensuring that no child is left behind.
President Duma Boko of Botswana highlighted the theme of this year's celebration, 'My Day, My Rights,' which serves as a stark reminder to governments and global leaders that promises alone are insufficient. Children in the region continue to face significant barriers to education, healthcare, safety, and freedom, Boko noted.
"We must take bold action to improve the lives and livelihoods of our children. The time for change is now," Boko emphasized. "We gather here to affirm that the rights of every child are paramount. Every child deserves a safe, healthy, loving environment where they can dream and aspire without fear or limitation."
Boko outlined Botswana's comprehensive strategy to modernize youth engagement, which includes a complete overhaul of the education system, ensuring high-speed and reliable internet access for all schools, implementing targeted cybersecurity measures, prioritizing teacher training with updated skills, and upgrading school facilities. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to enhance children's education, digital access, and overall welfare.
World Children's Day, observed annually on November 20th, serves as a global platform to advocate for children's rights and welfare, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This day is a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and nurture the future generation.
